Capability Statements

Develops and uses appropriate digital identities that support a positive personal and organisational reputation

                            Level 1                              Level 2                                Level 3

I know that online posts can stay in the public domain and will contribute to my digital identity, which can have a negative impact. I understand why I need to protect my own digital identity, and that of my organisation.

I carefully manage my own digital identity to protect my reputation (e.g. by using appropriate privacy settings for personal social media accounts). I also contribute positively to my organisation's digital identity in appropriate ways (e.g. by never sharing content that could negatively affect how the public views my profession or my organisation).

I recognise the value of positive digital identities and champion their use. I take proactive steps to develop and promote my own digital identity and that of my organisation, and actively support others to do the same.

Understands the risks of being online and takes measures to stay safe

                            Level 1                              Level 2                                Level 3

I know that the digital world can present risks and potential dangers. I do simple things to keep myself safe online (e.g. using strong passwords, looking out for suspicious emails, being cautious when sharing personal information) and protect my wellbeing (e.g. being aware of how much time I spend online).

I have a good understanding of the potential dangers of being online (e.g. phishing emails, device hacking, unsafe online interactions). I am vigilant when using digital tools and always alert to suspicious activity, taking necessary steps to protect myself.

I have advanced knowledge of online dangers and understand how innovations like artificial intelligence could present additional risks. I have an in-depth understanding of measures that can be taken to ensure online safety (e.g. backing up data, using security software, managing cookie preferences), and use these to proactively keep myself and others safe online.

Follows organisational rules and policies in relation to online safety and cyber security

                            Level 1                              Level 2                                Level 3

I know I must comply with organisational rules that exist to ensure technology is used safely and securely in order to protect staff and those who use services. I regularly complete my organisation’s training on this, always put what I have learned into practice, and I am confident I know how to access further information if needed.

I have good knowledge of the guidelines, policies and legislation that apply to online safety and cyber security and am confident I comply with these. I understand the potential impact of a cyber security incident and I follow organisational procedures to report any suspicious activity or potential issues.

I have in-depth knowledge of the guidelines, policies and legislation that apply to online safety and cyber security, and I champion compliance across my organisation. I am aware of the cyber threats to my organisation and take measures to reduce risk, contributing to continuity plans and offering advice to others.

Demonstrates respectful, ethical and appropriate attitudes and behaviours in online environments

                            Level 1                              Level 2                                Level 3

I know what it means to behave in ways that are respectful, ethical and appropriate when I’m online (e.g. considering others’ feelings, respecting privacy, sharing personal beliefs in a balanced way). I understand what the negative impacts of not doing this can be (e.g. online bullying). I always behave appropriately online.

I follow relevant guidelines to ensure my behaviour in digital interactions is always respectful, ethical and appropriate, and I report any instances of behaviour that breach these guidelines. I ensure that the use of digital tools is always fair and doesn’t negatively impact anyone.

I lead by example in behaving respectfully, ethically and appropriately in digital interactions and ensure others do the same, escalating any instances of non-compliance. I advocate for digital systems and processes that are fair, transparent and non-discriminatory, and am careful to consider the ethical implications of any new innovations (e.g. artificial intelligence).
