Ongoing development for HCSWs

Add to favourites

Ongoing development is vital for support workers as it ensures they remain equipped to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care in a constantly evolving healthcare environment. By regularly updating their knowledge and skills, support workers can keep pace with new clinical procedures, emerging technologies and updating care guidelines. This not only helps them to continue to meet the HCSW Codes and standards but also enhances their confidence and job satisfaction.

In addition, continuous learning promotes personal growth and creates opportunities for career progression, ultimately helping to improve the quality of care and support provided to patients and health and care teams.

Key resources

A range of key resources are available which can help facilitate the continued development of support workers in their roles:

  • The Framework implementation toolkit can be used by managers, service and team leads and educators to support implementing the Development and Education Framework for Levels 2-4 NMAHP HCSWs into practice.
  • As a manager or educator, you can guide support workers in using the four pillars of practice to identify individual learning goals. Once these areas are defined, our learning resources are intended to work in tandem with the individuals’ Turas Professional Portfolio, supporting reflective learning and continuous personal development.
  • The Learning Resources pages in Support Worker Central offer a wide range of self-directed materials to support ongoing development. These resources cover key areas such as delegation, communication, medicines administration and more.
  • The Careers pathways and qualifications pages within Support Workers Central offer valuable information that can help guide and inform support workers in planning and progressing their careers.
