Real stories

Arts PsychotherapiesMental Health

Arts therapies include art therapy, music therapy, dramatherapy, and dance movement psychotherapy. Arts therapists used the Skills Maximisation Toolkit to explore service user journeys in mental health services. They identified barriers and areas where they could contribute.

They identified

  • Barriers: e.g. referral, limited awareness, poor career structure
  • Opportunities and Benefits: e.g. wider choice of therapies for service users, evidence of effectiveness.
  • Key targets: They connected to the “bigger picture”, to targets and priorities of senior managers.

They gathered data from Scotland-wide mental health statistics, prescribing information, research, and service user surveys. Then created action plans. Their actions focused on clinical vignettes showcasing benefits of art therapies, education, resource availability, career development, and cultural change. The Skills Maximisation Toolkit supported arts therapies to identify where they can improve service user outcomes.
