Welcome to Scotland's General Practice (GP) Workforce Centre: supporting, developing and retaining the general practice workforce in Scotland.
This is a dedicated resource developed by the Centre for Workforce Supply (CWS) and the Medical Directorate within Public Services Delivery Scotland, formerly NHS Education for Scotland. It brings together resources under a cohesive identity, which showcases the rewarding, inclusive, flexible, and supportive career pathways for general practitioners in Scotland.
This centre has been designed to provide signposting to resources, guidance, and examples of good practice relating to the supply, recruitment, retention, and sustainability of the general practice workforce in Scotland. These can be used to support GPs, GP practice managers/partners, supervisors/managers, and Health Board Primary Care teams.
Whether you're looking to attract new GPs with professionally designed NHS Scotland marketing assets, retain current staff through the Retention Programmes, or support IMG GPs with tailored information and resources, this is a centre for practical, accessible support to strengthen and sustain your GP workforce.

This section provides an overview of what’s involved in delivering postgraduate GP training and the steps to get started, including practical insights from experienced trainers and practices who have recently been approved.
Becoming a GP training practice is a valuable opportunity to support the development of future GPs while strengthening your own team and practice environment. Training practices benefit from enhanced recruitment, ongoing professional development, and a strong learning culture, alongside contributing to the wider sustainability of the GP workforce.
To get started, practices need to understand the approval process, support a GP to become an Educational Supervisor, and engage with regional training teams. With clear guidance, structured support, and funding available, becoming a training practice is an achievable step that enables you to play a key role in postgraduate GP education while bringing fresh perspectives and energy into your practice.
