Information and resources to support allied health professionals from overseas working in Scotland for the first time and their preceptors/managers
Preceptorship is particularly important for AHPs who have been recruited and/or educated internationally. Starting a new role can be daunting, and adding in starting a new role in a new country with potential cultural, communication and expectation differences, can make for a challenging initial settling in period.
The HCPC state that “For HCPC registrants who have come to work in the UK via our international registration route, preceptorship can provide a way to support acculturation to both their new working environment and to living in the UK.”

Support provided to international recruits varies across the health boards in Scotland. Some boards provide local induction/transition programmes therefore it is worth contacting your local AHP Practice Education Lead(s) to see what is available in your area

Each health board should also have an International Recruitment Lead therefore it is also worth contacting your local Human Resources (HR) team to find out who the lead is for your area. They may have tailored local resources to support the settling in period.
The Cultural Humility Digital Resource is recommended for all staff and managers to complete. It supports the development of positive cultural humility values and behaviours across the health and social care workforce.
