All grades of the AHP workforce require tailored structured support when going through a period of career transition. This is known as Preceptorship.  Examples of career transition include:

  • joining the workforce for the first time
  • returning to work after a long absence (including maternity leave)
  • moving to a new organisation (including from overseas)
  • transitioning into a new role   

Preceptorship helps build a confident, competent and resilient workforce capable of delivering excellent care.

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) are currently producing an AHP Preceptorship guidance document to support the AHP workforce to fully understand the concept of preceptorship and embed into practice.  The consultation period is now complete and the guidance is moving on to the next stage of development and design.

AHP Preceptorship Webinar 2024

This webinar was delivered on the 6th March 2024 by NHS Education for Scotland with guest speaker Florence Milliken from HCPC and AHPs with experience in preceptorship from across Scotland. 

The aims of the webinar are:

  • to introduce the HCPC Preceptorship principles
  • to describe what preceptorship is and it's benefits
  • to identify who should have access to preceptorship
  • to explain the roles and responsibilities of preceptee and preceptor
  • to share case studies examples of preceptorship in practice and shared learning
