International recruitment plays a vital role in meeting the health and care needs of people in Scotland.
Many internationally educated colleagues, including nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and doctors, are joining the NHS in Scotland, and they should be welcomed and valued.
We know diverse, inclusive, psychologically safe teams provide better, safer care. Working in the NHS in Scotland is a positive experience for many internationally educated colleagues, although some have a less positive experience.
This guide is aimed at everyone working in the NHS in Scotland, particularly those with direct responsibility for recruitment, line management and supervision of internationally educated colleagues.
It aims to help you gain an understanding of:
• The current state and processes of international recruitment.
• What our internationally educated colleagues experience.
• The fundamentals of cultural humility.
• What we can do as organisations and individuals to make things better.
• The resources that are available to support you and help you learn more.
Throughout this resource, we feature quotes from respondents to NHS Scotland’s latest international recruitment survey.
