The Thriving in a Digital Age Pathways are intended to help you as an individual build your understanding of the role of digital in health and social care. By working through the pathways you will be challenged to think about what you know and your understanding of working with a digital mindset.

Introduction

There are four cumulative pathways; Explore, Embed, Drive and Shape

The pathways are aligned to individual levels of responsibility and are designed for you to work through at your own pace. You can access the pathways via the menu on the left or further down this page in the Pathway Descriptions section.

We recommend you start with Explore and progress through the pathways in accordance with your level of responsibility, role and interest.

Each pathway contains five steps for you to work through. Each step consists of links to a resource (something to read, watch, or listen to) and accompanying activities to help you reflect on what you have learnt, and consider how you can apply the learning in your own organisation. The themes chosen are developed over the course of the pathways, with each building on ideas introduced in the pathway before.

Find out more in the Pathways Overview section, or go to the How to Use the Pathways and Pathway FAQs pages.

Pathway Descriptions

Use the descriptions and links below to select a pathway to work through.

Explore

This pathway is for everyone working in health and social care, irrespective of role.

Explore introduces the fundamental concepts that underpin successful digital service delivery and transformative ways of working.

Embed

This pathway is for everyone, but especially for anyone who is responsible for managing or supporting others (e.g. supervisors, team leaders, first level managers), or anyone aspiring to develop their knowledge beyond the Explore pathway.

This pathway builds on the themes introduced in Explore. It encourages consideration of how these concepts can be embedded across day-to-day tasks, teams and services, and introduces new ideas.

Drive

This pathway is for everyone, but especially for anyone involved in leading and influencing change across services and organisations (e.g. senior managers, service or programme leads).

By developing the content in Embed, this pathway focuses on how the concepts can be threaded through ways of working to drive cultural change in organisations.

Shape

This pathway is for everyone, but especially for anyone responsible for making strategic decisions or leading organisations at a local, regional or national level (e.g. policy-makers, board-level leaders, chief executives, business owners, directors).

This pathway encapsulates the insights from Explore, Embed and Drive. It encourages consideration of how these ideas can be used to shape decisions and actions to have significant, positive impact for the sector.

Pathways Overview
Paper cut outs of people

The pathways are intended to build your digital understanding of health and social care. The content will develop and deepen your awareness of key concepts such as digital inclusion, service transformation and the importance of recording and using data appropriately.

The four cumulative pathways; ExploreEmbedDrive and Shape, are designed for individuals to work through and are aligned to levels of responsibility within health and social care organisations. Explore introduces fundamental concepts which are then built on in the other three pathways with consideration of how they can be embedded, driven and shaped across teams and organisations to improve outcomes.

Each pathway will prompt consideration of your current awareness and outlook, and encourage reflective thinking. You will work through a set of curated resources with associated activities and practical ideas that can be applied within your own organisation. The resources (articles, websites, blogs, videos, etc.) come from a wide range of sources and viewpoints but all are relevant to digital development within health and social care in Scotland.

The pathways are not specific to any profession, organisation or role and apply to the entire health and social care workforce in Scotland (NHS, Local Authorities, Health and Social Care Partnerships, Social Work, Social Care, Care and Support Providers, Housing, Third and Independent Sectors), including managers, leaders and those in strategic positions.

Although designed for individuals to work through, managers, leaders and those in strategic positions should consider how the pathways can be shared and embedded across organisations to support the development of workforce digital capabilities.

By working through the pathway steps you will be challenged to think about what you know and your understanding of working with a digital mindset.
