Welcome to Technology enhanced learning (TEL) Design and Facilitation.

Introduction

NHS Education for Scotland’s TEL team have created a series of learning resources and community spaces to support colleagues who design and facilitate digital learning.

Digital learning is the provision of education using a range of technologies. This includes synchronous (live) and asynchronous (access anytime) delivery.

Learning resources and communities

eLearning

You will learn how to create impactful digital learning resources and environments using evidence-informed approaches. Visit our eLearning section to access:

  • A stand-alone module: Foundations of adult education
  • Two programmes of learning: TEL Design and TEL Facilitation

Learning pages

  • Visit TEL Guides for access to a variety of stand-alone guides, checklists and toolkits.
  • Access Ideas for learning to explore creative examples of using technology to enhance learning.
  • Head over to TEL Learning videos for short recorded lessons on TEL related subjects.
  • Explore the TEL glossary for definitions of TEL related words and terms.

Communities

We have three communities set up to support NES colleagues who design and deliver digital learning.

Note: You will need to be signed in to your Turas account in order to view and access the following eLearning modules

For a tour of the programmes or access to support, contact Vikki Hadden.

Foundations of adult education

Foundations is a stand-alone module to compliment the TEL Design and TEL Facilitation programmes of learning. This module will introduce five key concepts that set the groundwork for the design and delivery of digital learning. The learning in Foundations of adult education includes an introduction to learning theory, learner-centred approaches, writing aims and learning outcomes, assessment and feedback, and evaluation.

TEL Design

TEL Design is a programme of six modules aimed at those who design and develop digital learning. The modules will support you to design and create digital learning resources using evidence-informed approaches. Digital learning resources describe any learning material created using technology. Examples include, slide decks, interactive documents, video, eLearning modules, discussion forums, podcasts, infographics, and blogs.

The learning in TEL Design includes taking a learner-centred approach, planning methods, choosing technology to enhance learning, creating impactful resources, preparing resources for rollout, and implementing continuous improvement processes.

TEL Facilitation

TEL Facilitation is a programme of six modules aimed at those who design and facilitate synchronous (live) and blended learning. The modules will support you to design and deliver learning in these environments using evidence-informed approaches. Facilitation is a broad term used to describe the process of moderating, leading, and supporting learning. For example, a facilitator may:

  • Moderate by guiding learners during classroom discussions, workshops, practice, simulation, and problem-based scenarios.
  • Lead by delivering instruction and directing assessment.
  • Support by co-ordinating and creating inclusive and impactful learning environments, resources, and feedback methods.

TEL Facilitation assumes you fulfil most or all these roles. Learning includes planning methods, designing for inclusion, the impact and role of the facilitator, facilitating effective learning experiences, getting ready for live facilitation, and implementing continuous improvement processes.

Prepare to learn
  • You may find it beneficial to start with Foundations of adult education. This module outlines basic educational principles that are essential to evidence-informed design and facilitation.
  • We recommend setting aside protected time for the activities in each module. You will apply your learning to planned or existing resources. For this reason, the activities may take some time.
  • Visit the NES quality guidelines for digital learning resources on Turas Learn.
Evidence your learning

Some of the module activities invite you to upload your work to a professional portfolio. This refers to the Professional portfolio on Turas. Everyone with a Turas account has access to this function. You can use the portfolio to showcase your learning to peers, mentors, and line managers. Check out our Guide to Using Turas Professional Portfolio
