TEL Design and facilitation

Supporting those who design and facilitate synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning.

About this series

Organised into five sequential steps, the series guides participants through an entire instructional design process. Based on your specific learning requirements, it may not be necessary to complete all modules. You are welcome to dip in and out at your convenience. Detailed information including module content and support resources is in our learner guide: TEL Design and facilitation series of learning on Sway. Check it out before starting the modules.

The aim of TEL design and facilitation is to demonstrate an evidence-informed approach to the design, development and facilitation of digital learning.

On completion of the learning, you should be able to:

  1. Incorporate learner-centred principles into the plan and design of your digital learning.
  2. Utilise NES templates to implement a methodical process for the planning and design of digital learning.
  3. Develop inclusive, impactful learning resources using appropriate technology and evidence-informed practices.
  4. Formulate a comprehensive strategy to prepare learning resources and environments for rollout.
  5. Establish a plan to implement an ongoing cycle of continuous improvement for your resources and environments.

Step 1: Prepare

Module: All about the learner

All about the learner helps you set the scene for taking a learner-centred approach to the design of learning.

Content
  • 6 steps to a learner-centred approach
  • Accessibility and digital accessibility
  • Universal design for learning
  • Multimedia principles
Step 2: Analyse and design

Module: Plan and design

Plan and design guides you to adopt a structured planning and design method when creating digital learning resources.

Content
  • Design essentials: key people and instructional design models
  • Planning your learning: The information you must gather (who, why, what and how).
  • How to complete template planners for both programmes of learning and single resources.
Step 3: Develop

We have 3 modules to choose from depending on the type of learning you are creating.

I am developing asynchronous resources

Asynchronous resources are those learners can access at any time. Examples include slide decks, interactive documents, video, eLearning modules, discussion forums, podcasts, infographics, and blogs.

Module 3.1: Let's create

Let's create supports you to choose appropriate technology and develop impactful asynchronous learning resources.

Content
  • Essential guidance: Copyright and plagiarism, creating content with AI, and Branding and style
  • Development of: Video, podcasts, slide decks, eLearning modules, forums, blogs, infographics and web-based documents
  • Narration skills for video and podcast

I am developing and facilitating synchronous and blended environments

The following 2 modules focus on how to facilitate learning in synchronous (live) environments. Facilitation is a broad term used to describe the process of moderating, leading, and supporting learning.

Module 3.2: Make learning stick

Make learning stick supports you to use evidence-informed instructional strategies to facilitate effective synchronous and blended learning environments.

Content
  • Instructional strategies: Direct instruction, indirect instruction, experiential learning, flipped classroom
  • Strategies for developing learning activities
  • Interactive tools: breakouts, polls, whiteboard and collaboration tools

Module 3.3: The impact of you

The impact of you encourages you to critically reflect on your facilitation skills and identify areas of improvement for an enhanced learner experience.

Content
  • Self-directed learning
  • Power of presence
  • The effective facilitator
  • Facilitation FAQs
  • Delivering impactful presentations

I am creating both asynchronous and synchronous learning for a blended experience

Complete all 3 modules!
Step 4: Implement

Module: Get set to deliver

Get set to deliver helps you prepare your digital learning resources and environments for rollout to learners.

Content
  • 3 stage release process including content review, pilot testing and final checks
  • Promote your learning resource
Step 5: Evaluate

Module: Review to improve

Review to improve supports you to plan for the continuous improvement of your learning resources.

Content
  • Evaluation
  • Continuous improvement
