This collection of resources provides introductory level information about some core areas of practice for those working in support roles in the health or social care sector. They are intended to support those who have little or no previous experience at pre-induction stage. They complement learning from core employer induction materials which may include those delivered in-house and those on TURAS Learn or other digital learning platforms. For those working in social care, the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) Learning Zone is the main learning platform of use. This collection of resources may also be useful as a reference for more experienced health or social care support workers wishing to review or revisit aspects of their practice.
The health and social care landscape is complex and contains multiple services delivered across a range of settings by individuals in various distinct roles. You may find some of the modules or aspects of this resource to be more or less relevant depending on your role and individual learning needs. For example, those working in health care support worker roles may find the clinical observations resource more relevant than if you work in social care. Although some elements may not relate to your current role, this may change in the future.
Some videos demonstrate equipment such as an adjustable height bed that may be encountered in a hospital, a care home or sometimes in a person’s own home. Those working in the community may need to think about how some of the techniques shown may need to be modified or adapted considering the constraints of the equipment and space available. Local policies and practices will also need to be reviewed and considered alongside the learning gained from these resources.
Since it would not be possible to include specific representation for every individual service or role, this resource should be considered as a generic and introductory overview of key principles that are likely to be encountered across a range of service areas. More targeted, role specific learning materials will be provided by your own employer during induction.
The modules are flexible and designed to be accessed according to your own learning needs. Although the module topics are related, they do not follow sequentially and can be completed singularly or in any order. You can do as many or few modules as you like and can repeat them as many times as you wish. However, be aware that you may lose your learning completion status if you choose to do so.
These eLearning modules explain some of the routine processes that underpin the health and social care support worker roles, with the aim of supporting new workers to develop their skill and confidence. The modules can be completed and reviewed as required.
