The nine scenarios below were developed for the COVID-19 Unit E Rehearsing skills using simulation online resource.

COVID-19 based scenarios

Scenario 1: Self Protection Bundle – Primary care and community

Community or primary care setting: A man aged 36 is brought into a primary healthcare COVID-19 hub by his family with anosmia a high fever sweating and a dry cough which has just started. He is suspected of having COVID-19.

Scenario 2: Self Protection Bundle in secondary care

Secondary care setting: John McCoombe aged 36 is brought into a COVID-19 ward with a high fever sweating, a dry cough which has just started and difficulty in breathing. He is suspected of having COVID-19.

Scenario 3: Workplace Protection Bundle

Secondary care setting: John McCoombe aged 36 is brought into a primary care COVID 19 hub or secondary care COVID-19 ward with a high fever sweating, a dry cough which has just started and difficulty in breathing. He is suspected of having COVID-19.

Scenario 4: Use in a simulated HDU or acute COVID-19 Assessment Unit

Patient with asthma and suspected COVID-19: 25 year old male, law student, lives alone. Plays football twice a week. Allergic to cats. Non-smoker. Social alcohol. Sister asthmatic too.

Scenario 5: Scenario of use in simulated HDU or acute COVID-19 assessment unit

A patient who is confused: Patient is 74 years old and arrived in the COVID-19 ward following admission from the community COVID-19 assessment centre. Over the last 2-3 days has become confused with fever and increasing shortness of breath.

Scenario 6: Difficult to Ventilate

Patient with COVID-19 who develops respiratory failure secondary to pneumonia on a background of COPD becomes difficult to ventilate. Diagnosis & best treatment are not clear.

Scenario 7: Scenario for use in a simulated HDU setting

A patient COVID-19 respiratory sepsis and cardiogenic shock: Its 1700 and you are looking after a 38 year old female who presented with a 24 hour history of anosmia, sore throat, productive cough, breathlessness, nausea & vomiting. In ED she was found to be hypoxic, pyrexia and hypotensive.

Scenario 8: Deteriorating Patient on COVID-19 ward

Margaret Wilson: admitted to the COVID ward yesterday with positive test with increasing shortness of breath and productive cough, sweats and rigors. Systemically unwell and confused.

Scenario 9: Decision making in ward in respect of patients with COVID-19

The COVID pandemic has been peaking in your locality with the numbers of patients requiring ventilatory support rising. The hospital is almost at capacity in the ITU with only 1 ventilated bed space left available. You are in the assessment area for patients being admitted to hospital with worsening symptoms of suspected COVID-19.
