Multi-professional clinical team induction programme

Add to favourites

One of the advantages of having a well thought out progressive multi-professional induction programme is that it can accelerate the engagement and effective integration of a new practitioner into the multi-professional team.

There are 4 key principles that underpin a clinical team induction programme:

Staff Physical and Psychological Wellbeing:

Optimising health, safety and wellbeing during any health care crisis such as the COVID-19 outbreak is vital. A clinical team induction programme will enable healthcare practitioners to look after their physical and mental wellbeing. Providing strategies to support these should be embedded throughout training.

Patient safety:

There is a principle to support the workforce in avoiding unintended or unexpected harm to patients during the provision of healthcare. A team clinical induction programme will enable healthcare practitioners to incorporate strategies to minimise incidents and incorporate continuous improvements to achieve high quality care in their designated role.

Development of effective communication strategies:

Effective communication can help build strong relationships with patients and families, as well as other members of the interdisciplinary team to provide a high level of care. Healthcare practitioners need to be supported in their communication needs specific to the environment of the workplace and to develop strategies including use of IT for effective communication in any challenging environment which is particularly important to improve safe, effective care in different contexts.

Evidence based practice:

Evidence based practice incorporates the integration of the best available evidence, clinician expertise with the patients’ knowledge, wishes, values and circumstances- a person centred approach. In any setting healthcare practitioners will require to be flexible and adaptable in light of the best available evidence.

An example of a multi-professional clinical team induction programme

We have developed a series of interactive stations for a multi-professional clinical team induction programme which covers both generic and specific clinical skills using an agreed lesson template.

The developed stations and resources can be used or adapted as needed to create any healthcare induction programme.

The context for the development of this shared package was for the clinical teams who would be working in a step down Covid-19 facility in the Nightingale hospital, NHS Louisa Jordan as part of the response to the pandemic.

This multi-professional team induction programme was created to meet the required three tiers of practitioners needed at NHS Louisa Jordan to care for step down Covid-19 patients prior to their discharge home.

The three day multi-professional clinical team induction programme was comprised of a team drill every morning followed on days 1 and 2 by a rotation through a series of 45 minute generic skills or clinical skills training stations which were dependent on the tier of practitioner.

Day 3 focused on immersive patient simulation scenarios followed by a team ward simulation exercise in the afternoon.

This multi-professional clinical team induction package shares:

    • IRMER guidelines (Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations (2000))
