There is a recognised need to strengthen and increase opportunities for recruitment to pre-registration nursing programmes to meet Scotland’s nursing workforce requirements and address the ongoing national challenges of recruitment to pre-registration nursing education programmes. Another consideration is how to further expand widening access routes into nursing. Nursing programmes already work to attract a broader range of students and there is scope to increase this further by offering more flexible and accessible programme designs.

This work-integrated test of change will combine academic learning with practice learning over four years. Students will remain employed and will be sponsored by the Health Board to ensure dedicated study time. There will be the potential to articulate into Year 2, depending on previous experience and qualifications. Students will undertake blended learning, attending classes on average one day per week and spending one day per week in personal and online study. Although students will undertake much of their practice learning in their own workplace, they will also rotate for a proportion of practice learning hours into other areas, to ensure they can achieve all required proficiencies and skills.
