Recruitment challenges to workforce have been identified by some practice partners, in particular in the field of mental health nursing. Implemented as an ongoing test of change, the Open University (OU) Certificate in Higher Education in Healthcare Practice is a qualification that can be used as an entry qualification to the OU Nursing programme. This qualification provides entry to Stage 2 of the OU BSc (Hons) Nursing Programme.
Following the Plan, Attract, Train, Employ and Nurture principles the OU intend to collaborate with existing NHS partners to further build on previously established implementation plans regarding this education. In collaboration with Health Boards, the OU will identify suitable candidates to apply for study and will recruit to the Cert HE. Those who successfully complete this programme will be supported to apply for the BSc (Hons) Nursing and entry at stage 2 of the programme. This partnership approach with Health Boards will help to address specific staffing challenges in the nursing workforce for specific fields of practice and in remote and rural areas. It also provides a clear progression pathway for healthcare support workers.
