Professional Roles - Dietician
Sarah facilitates a group weight management programme. Clients are referred into this group by GPs. She notices one of the group members is not engaging with group activities and identifying goals for himself. Sarah offers a 1:1 session and it appears that the eating patterns are more in line with Binge Eating Disorder. Sarah recognises that this group could be detrimental for this particular client and discusses more appropriate intervention with the GP.
Nicole is a dietitian working in a diabetes clinic and becomes aware that the young adult she is working with is starting to lose weight and managing to achieve ‘excellent’ diabetic control through restricting her carbohydrate intake and withholding her insulin at times. Nicole offers the young adult support and psycho-education to understand the importance of optimising diabetic control with regular eating and regular insulin administration. If this intervention does not help the young person make change, she will escalate this to a senior colleague.
Paul is an experienced dietitian working in High Dependency Unit and at times is involved in the care of low weight patients who are admitted for refeeding and medical stabilisation. Paul is aware of the particular risk factors associated with refeeding and will liaise with his local ED service for clinical supervision and support for transition.
Priya works in a Specialist Eating Disorder service for young people. She provides CBT-E to support patients to make dietary change and consider steps towards recovery. Priya provides education within the team and to her ‘non ED specialist’ dietetic colleagues in addition to providing clinical supervision.
