Key messages from people with lived experience

Advice and guidance from people with lived experience has been central to developing the National Specification for the Care and Treatment of Eating Disorders in Scotland (Scottish Government, 2024). Two of the main themes in this specification are to improve the consistency of service provision across Scotland, and to increase training for healthcare professionals to enable earlier detection, prompt referral, and appropriate treatment. The aim of this Turas site is to help guide staff to a selection of resources and training relevant to their role.

How to use the site

A wide range of staff and carers can support people experiencing an eating disorder. The Information for all resources are available to all users.

Information for all - contains links to resources useful for all staff and carers supporting a child, young person or adult experiencing an eating disorder.  It encourages awareness of the different types of eating disorders and early signposting to further assessment and interventions.

The below resources are available to users who have registered for a TURAS account.

Recognition of need and assessment - Following on from Information for all, these training resources are suitable for staff who have a role in assessing mental and physical health including dietary intake. Resources are further subdivided according to the staff member’s role which may range from carrying out an initial screening assessment of physical and mental health at a skilled practice type, to specialist assessments including differential diagnosis and assimilating all relevant information for people at high risk.

Interventions - These training resources focus on evidence-based interventions for multi-disciplinary staff including psychological therapy, dietetics, medical and nursing interventions.  They are further subdivided into practice types from skilled to specialist.

Guidance documents - This page has links to recent policy documents and evidence-based guides.

Other relevant training topics - This page links through to resources on other relevant training topics such as trauma, and neurodivergence across the lifespan, as well as linking to resources on supporting staff well-being.
