Welcome to NHS Highland.
Medical Education NHS Highland welcomes all international medical graduates to the Scottish Highlands. We pride ourselves as an inclusive, welcoming and multicultural workplace.
We are committed to the Softer Landing, Safer Care (SLSC) initiative for our new IMGs, which is supported by Health Board Medical Directors and Scottish Government. This is a framework for a 2-week shadowing period for IMGs at the start of their post so they have sufficient time to acclimatise to working in the NHS whilst an individualised action plan is agreed between them and their Educational Supervisor.

The Welcoming International Medical Graduates New to Scotland (WINS) programme is designed to help you settle into your new role with confidence. Through the programme, you'll learn more about NHS Scotland systems, workplace culture, professional expectations, and the practical aspects of working in a new healthcare environment.
You'll also have the opportunity to connect with other IMGs, share experiences, and build valuable professional networks.
Look out for your invitation to attend a WINS face-to-face event or for further information, contact ejaz.farooqui@nhs.scot.
NHS Highland offers a peer support network for IMGs via a WhatsApp group, with details shared during the bootcamp.
Guidance and Support
Career guidance and pastoral support are available to International Medical Graduates (IMGs) at all stages of their careers, including those in locally employed roles and GP Specialty Training (GPST).
Scottish IMG Buddy Scheme
The Scotland Deanery has a buddy scheme to support IMG doctors who are new to working in NHS Scotland. Buddies are doctors with experience of working in NHS Scotland and may offer support and guidance. The aim is to match doctors where possible with a buddy in the same location, region or specialty.
