As the IMG Lead, I would like to warmly welcome all International Medical Graduates to NHS Borders. I recognise the valuable experience, skills, and diversity that IMGs bring to our workforce and understand the unique challenges of adapting to a new healthcare system and culture. Differential attainment remains an important issue, and I am grateful to our trainers and managers for the additional support they provide to IMG colleagues. The NHS Borders IMG Network and I are here to support both IMGs and those working with them. Please feel free to contact me if you would like advice, guidance, or simply someone to talk to about any concerns or challenges. WINS: Welcoming International Medical Graduates New to Scotland
Attending WINS is an excellent opportunity for IMGs to gain practical insights into working and living in Scotland, connect with peers, and access support that can help ease their transition into NHS practice and life in Scotland.
Local IMG enhanced induction programme includes the following:
The NHS Borders IMG Bootcamp is a two-day programme, delivered twice yearly, and tailored for all International Medical Graduates, including junior doctors, specialty doctors, and consultants. It provides a structured introduction to NHS Scotland, NHS Borders systems, workplace culture, inclusion, belonging, clinical documentation, and essential clinical skills.
The programme also includes simulation-based medical scenarios to support clinical decision-making and safe practice within the NHS context. Dedicated sessions on communication skills, including breaking bad news and professional-to-professional communication, help participants navigate the cultural and professional expectations of UK healthcare. Each IMG also meets their Educational Supervisor to undertake a structured needs assessment and develop an individualised support plan. Aligned with the NHS Scotland Softer Landing, Safer Care framework, the bootcamp aims to ensure that IMGs feel welcomed, supported, and confident in their new roles.
Relevant Themes and Feedback
The boot camp content is shaped by extensive feedback from local IMGs and insights from NES publications. Topics reflect real-life experiences and challenges faced by IMGs living and working in the Scottish Borders.
Ongoing Teaching and Development
Throughout the year, IMG-specific teaching sessions are delivered, focusing on portfolio development, reflective writing, and career progression.
Regular Communication
IMGs receive regular email updates from the Medical Education department, keeping them informed about upcoming teaching sessions, events, and opportunities.
Access to Resources
Locally employed IMG doctors have full access to teaching and training resources, coordinated through their line managers and the Medical Education department.
Equal Access for IMG GPSTs
IMG GP Specialty Trainees (GPSTs) benefit from equal access to all training resources provided by the Medical Education department.
Peer Support Networks for IMGs
Scottish IMG Facebook Group
In addition, IMGs are encouraged to join the Scottish IMG Facebook group. This wider community connects IMGs across Scotland, offering a platform to share experiences, access resources, and stay informed about national initiatives and opportunities relevant to IMG doctors.
WhatsApp Group for IMGs
We offer a dedicated WhatsApp group exclusively for International Medical Graduates working in the region. This group provides a quick and informal way to stay in touch with peers, share updates, ask questions, and receive reminders about teaching sessions and events. It’s a great space for day-to-day support and networking.
