As the IMG Lead, I would like to warmly welcome all International Medical Graduates to NHS Borders. I recognise the valuable experience, skills, and diversity that IMGs bring to our workforce and understand the unique challenges of adapting to a new healthcare system and culture. Differential attainment remains an important issue, and I am grateful to our trainers and managers for the additional support they provide to IMG colleagues. The NHS Borders IMG Network and I are here to support both IMGs and those working with them. Please feel free to contact me if you would like advice, guidance, or simply someone to talk to about any concerns or challenges. Together, we are committed to ensuring that every IMG feels welcomed, valued, supported, and able to thrive in NHS Borders.

Welcoming International Medical Graduates New to NHS Scotland (WINS)
The Welcoming International Medical Graduates New to Scotland (WINS) programme is designed to help you settle into your new role with confidence. Through the programme, you'll learn more about NHS Scotland systems, workplace culture, professional expectations, and the practical aspects of working in a new healthcare environment.
You'll also have the opportunity to connect with other IMGs, share experiences, and build valuable professional networks.
One of the strengths of WINS is that Educational Supervisors (ESs) are also invited to attend. Their involvement helps foster strong, supportive trainer-trainee relationships and encourages a shared understanding of the trainee's development and wellbeing.

Peer Support Networks for IMGs
WhatsApp Group for IMGs
We offer a dedicated WhatsApp group exclusively for International Medical Graduates working in the region. This group provides a quick and informal way to stay in touch with peers, share updates, ask questions, and receive reminders about teaching sessions and events. It’s a great space for day-to-day support and networking.

Scottish IMG Buddy Scheme
The Scotland Deanery has a buddy scheme to support IMG doctors who are new to working in NHS Scotland. Buddies are doctors with experience of working in NHS Scotland and may offer support and guidance. The aim is to match doctors where possible with a buddy in the same location, region or specialty.
