The Scotland GP Returner and International Induction Programme

Welcome to this dedicated resource to support you back to General Practice.

Are you interested in finding your way back to General Practice after a career break, or time working overseas?

Scotland offers a diverse range of career opportunities for skilled GPs.  By joining the Returners or International Induction programme, you will be offered flexible, tailored support to enable you to safely join the General Practice workforce in Scotland.

Support for you

Would you like to return to work as a General Practitioner? Have you trained overseas and wish to gain experience of working in NHS General Practice before joining the GP community in Scotland?

You may be eligible for either of two programmes – the Scotland GP Returner programme or the Scotland GP International Induction Programme.

Our International Induction Programme (IIP) and Returners programmes provide a straightforward route for you to either return safely to General Practice in a supported way or, if you have no previous experience, to be fully inducted into NHS General Practice.

The programme will be tailored around you following an individual learning needs assessment. You will be allocated a practice-based supervisor who will provide feedback to support your integration as an independent general medical practitioner in the NHS in Scotland.

These programmes are funded by Scottish Government, providing applicants with a salary to support them whilst on the programme.

Both programmes offer a period of up to 6 months (whole time equivalent) with supervised clinical sessions in General Practice, as well as workplace based assessment & educational guidance.

The Scotland GP Returner Programme

The Scotland GP Returner Programme is for GPs who have worked in NHS General Practice but have been out of clinical General Practice in the UK for more than two years and wish to return to work in NHS General Practice in Scotland.  This might include GPs who are returning from a career break or those returning from working outside the UK. This programme is funded by Scottish Government and operated by NHS Education for Scotland, providing applicants with a salary to support them whilst on the programme.

Scotland International Induction Programme

The Scotland International Induction Programme provides introduction to working in NHS General Practice in a supported way. The programme will be tailored around you following an individual learning needs assessment. You will be allocated a practice-based supervisor who will provide feedback to support your integration as an independent general medical practitioner in the NHS in Scotland.
