This guide has been designed for final year GP speciality trainees who need to secure visa sponsorship after they complete their training, in order to remain in the NHS Scotland Workforce.
You will find guidance and signposting to information about visa sponsorship, and job opportunities, which can help you to progress your career in NHS Scotland.
Explore step 3 of 5 to continue your GP career in Scotland.
Around four to six months before you are expected to CCT, talk to your current training practice, your Educational Supervisor, and Training Programme Directors to find out about job opportunities they might know of in the local area. They might be able to facilitate introductions to practices who are either already visa sponsoring organisations, or who are interested in becoming one.
Some Health Boards offer Fellowship opportunities for early career GPs. As a GP on a Fellowships programme you would be employed by the Health Board, who would act as your visa sponsor, and then you would work the majority of the time in a practice, with some sessions in secondary care or Out of Hours.
NES offer a range of GP Fellowships focusing on Rural General Practice, Health Inequalities and Medical Education. There are also opportunities to apply for Academic Fellowships with Medical School Primary Care Departments.
You can search for roles on the NHS Scotland GP Jobs website and the Practice Recruitment website. Add ‘visa’ or ‘visa sponsorship’ or ‘visa sponsor’ to the search bar to help identify roles which can offer sponsorship.
Check for GP jobs within Health Boards such as in Out of Hours services by using the NHS Scotland Jobs website.
The Royal College of GPs also has a jobs board which could help you find your new role.
It is quicker if you can secure a job with a practice which already has a sponsoring licence. However, if you apply for a role with a practice who doesn’t currently hold a sponsor licence, but they are willing to get it, you can direct them to the CWS guidance for GP practices to help them understand the application process. If you apply for a job with a Health Board, including NES, they already hold a visa sponsor licence, and will be able to act as your new visa sponsor.
