This guide has been designed for final year GP speciality trainees who need to secure visa sponsorship after they complete their training, in order to remain in the NHS Scotland Workforce.
You will find guidance and signposting to information about visa sponsorship, and job opportunities, which can help you to progress your career in NHS Scotland.
Explore step 4 of 5 to continue your GP career in Scotland.
When applying for jobs, it is important to inform the Practice Manager/hiring GP/Health Board that you will require visa sponsorship.
Even if the practice already holds a sponsor licence, it can take a number of weeks for the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to be issued if they need to increase their allocation. Then you must apply for your new visa which can take up to three weeks to be issued.
If the practice does not currently hold a sponsor licence with UKVI, they can find guidance on how to apply for one using the CWS guide for GP Practices. Please note, it can take at least 8-12 weeks (sometimes longer) for their application to be processed, and for them to be able to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship. It is important to think about these timeframes before you accept a job offer that is conditional on the practice getting a sponsor licence.
