The Drive pathway is for anyone involved in leading and influencing change across services and organisations (e.g. senior managers, service or programme leads). By developing the content in Embed, this pathway focuses on how AI concepts can be threaded through ways of working to drive change in organisations.

If you aren't sure you understand any of the content, jump back to the Embed pathway and use the resources there to develop your knowledge before carrying on.

Step 1 - AI in Scotland

Read

The Scottish AI Alliance have developed the Scottish AI Playbook which aims to provide the resources, guidance and tools needed by Scottish organisations to support their journey to trustworthy, ethical and inclusive AI implementation.

The playbook contains useful information on why AI is so important for Scotland’s future, what key policies and legislation you need to be aware of, and what the priorities are for AI in Scotland.

Question

The playbook highlights collaboration opportunities as a key element of the Scottish AI roadmap.

  • What people or organisations could you collaborate with when it comes to AI?
  • What support would you need to make this happen?
Step 2 - AI Spheres of Influence
Question
Take a moment to reflect on your organisation’s approach to AI. How is this organised? How are the many different opportunities being managed, along with associated risks and challenges?

This article from CAST proposes the ‘AI Spheres of Influence Diagram’ which highlights the different perspectives and contexts that can be relevant to AI conversations.

Step 3 - Developing an Organisational AI Strategy in Practice (New)
Overview

As AI becomes more widely used, organisations need to think strategically about how it supports their priorities, values and services.

Those leading and influencing change play a key role in creating the conditions for AI to be adopted safely, responsibly and sustainably, with clear governance, workforce engagement and a focus on outcomes.

Watch

Watch the Learning from the Front - Digital Transformation Webinar Series Episode 2: Developing an Organisational AI Strategy in Practic”, featuring Scott Jaffray, Director of Digital at NHS Forth Valley.

The session shares NHS Forth Valley’s practical approach to developing an organisational AI strategy, including how it is moving from interest and experimentation towards meaningful, well-governed adoption aligned with organisational priorities.

Task

After watching, reflect on:

  • What elements of NHS Forth Valley’s approach help move AI from experimentation towards sustainable organisational use?

  • What conditions would need to be in place for AI to be adopted safely and meaningfully in your own organisation?
Step 4 - Building Trust in AI
Overview

Artificial intelligence has the potential to improve services and support decision making across health and social care. Successful adoption depends on trust. Staff, patients and organisations need awareness that AI systems are transparent, reliable and used appropriately.

Listen

Listen to the first 8 minutes and 5 seconds of "Tech Life - The Problem with AI" from BBC Sounds. The programme explores how researchers and technology companies are developing new approaches to AI that combine machine learning with symbolic reasoning. This approach, known as neuro-symbolic AI, aims to make AI systems more transparent by helping them explain how decisions are reached, identify uncertainty and provide greater insight into their reasoning.

Questions
Why might transparency and explainability be important when using AI within health and social care settings?
Task

Identify three factors that would help promote trust, transparency and responsible use of AI within your organisation.

Step 5 - Leading Responsible AI Adoption
Overview

AI can reduce administrative burden, support decision-making and create more time for care and service improvement. However, it can also change roles and introduce new responsibilities around oversight, validation and accountability.

Successful adoption depends on clear governance, workforce involvement and ensuring staff have the skills and confidence to use AI safely and effectively.

Read

Read "Beyond Productivity: AI and NHS Workforce Implications."

Although written from an NHS perspective, many of the themes are relevant across health and social care. The report explores how AI is changing roles, skills and ways of working, highlighting the importance of workforce development, governance, professional judgement and leadership in supporting responsible adoption. It also considers how AI can create new responsibilities around oversight, validation and accountability.

Task

Identify one area where AI could support your team or service.

Consider:

  • What is the intended benefit

  • How roles or responsibilities may change

  • Where human oversight must remain

  • What training or guidance staff would need

  • How success would be measured

Action
Identify one practical step your organisation could take to prepare staff for responsible AI adoption.
