The Embed pathway is for anyone who is responsible for managing or supporting others (e.g. supervisors, team leaders, first level managers), or anyone aspiring to develop their knowledge beyond the Explore pathway. This pathway looks at the practical implementation of AI solutions, and the risks and challenges that can come with this.

If you aren't sure you understand any of the content, jump back to the Explore pathway and use the resources there to develop your knowledge before carrying on.

Step 1 - AI in Scotland
Read

The Scottish AI Alliance have developed this introductory guide to highlight the opportunities and benefits of AI, as well as the risks and ethical considerations that must be factored in.

The guide also looks at the current use of AI across Scotland – pay particular attention to the ‘healthcare’ section.

Task
Your organisation may also have it’s own guidance on how to use AI safely with consideration of risks and ethical factors. Find out what support is available locally and ensure your colleagues are also aware of this.
Step 2 - AI in Practice

Read

The Scottish AI Register provides information on the AI systems in use or in development within the Scottish public sector. For each AI system on the register, there is a helpful breakdown of the data sets used, how the system works and how human oversight is factored in.

Browse the register to find relevant examples to help you understand AI in practice.

Question
Having explored the examples on the register, where do you think there might be opportunities to utilise AI across your work or the services you provide?
Step 3 - AI Impact and Challenges
Read

To successfully embed AI across our health and social care services, it is crucial we understand the potential impact it could have and what challenges come with it. This SPICe (Scottish Parliament Information Centre) report from June 2024 provides a useful summary of this in relation to AI in Scottish Healthcare. Pages 18 to 25 are particularly relevant for this step but you are welcome to read the entire report.

The Scottish AI Summit takes place each year to help embed a trustworthy, ethical, and inclusive AI future. In 2024, Rachel Coldicutt (Researcher and Strategist specialising in the social impact of new and emerging technologies) spoke about why a careful and considered approach to AI is needed.

Step 5 - AI Myths
Question

It's important to remember that everyone will have different perceptions of AI. Some may be excited about the transformative opportunities it offers, whilst others may be more cautious and fearful of how it may negatively impact them.

Before we start this step, take a moment to reflect on your personal use of AI. Do you think it is something that will help you in your everyday life, and are there any concerns that you have?

Task
Take some time to ask your colleagues about their perceptions of AI. What are they curious about, and what excites them? What concerns do they have and what might be holding them back? Use insights from the video to a shine a light on the common myths and help turn any uncertainty into understanding.
