The SMMDP ‘Obstetric Considerations for Healthcare Providers (HCP) caring for pregnant or postnatal women out with a maternity setting’ resource is designed to support healthcare professionals who may be required care for pregnant and / or postnatal women in a non-maternity care setting.
This resource aims to provide basic guidance and considerations to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the baby in any environment.
The key message throughout the resource is “If there is anything that is worrying the woman or yourself, please contact the maternity team, they will always be available to support and advise you”.

Taking good quality blood spot samples in term babies is an important part of newborn health screening in Scotland. There tends to be a high uptake for newborn screening (99.7% of babies born in Scotland in 2023/2024 had a blood spot test performed). However, there is an increasing percentage of samples that are being rejected by the Scottish Newborn Screening Laboratory. 4% of all samples were rejected between 2023 and 2024. Rejections are due to errors in sample technique, for example, insufficient sample was retrieved and administration errors, for example, no CHI number was provided.
The taking a blood spot sample resource will aim to improve practice and thereby reduce the number of avoidable repeat tests required within Scotland.
Providing a series of recommendations, the Midwifery Workforce and Education Review for Scotland (commissioned by the Chief Nursing Officer Directorate of the Scottish Government, and published by NHS Education for Scotland), is a review of national midwifery workforce and pre-registration education requirements, to ensure that Scotland has the right midwifery workforce, in the right place, with the right skills and competencies to support current and future service reform and sustainability.
