As a component of the NHS Scotland Academy, Learning and Innovation Directorate in NHS Education for Scotland (NES), our focus is on supporting innovation though workforce education, training and workforce redesign”.

Scotland’s National Innovation Strategy (2023) defines innovation as “The introduction and implementation of a new or significantly improved product, service, process, or method with the purpose of helping to solve societal challenges or delivering economic growth”.

NHS Research and Innovation Plan

The NES Learning and Education Research and Innovation Plan outlines how NES will work with staff, learners, partners and stakeholders to deliver our ambitions for research and innovation, using emergent  technology and innovation  to improve education and learning and create a better and more sustainable future for health and social care.

The Research and innovation Plan builds upon 4 strategic commitments:

5 key themes are intended to enable implementation of the plan:

Progressing the Plan

These themes are progressed through separate workstreams which focus on innovation pipelines and workforce diversification.

Strategic collaboration and partnerships enable understanding and analysis of the likely impact of emergent technologies on progressive care pathways.

This supports forecasting, planning and development of new skills and capability needed in the health and care workforce.
