Information on Supervision and Preceptorship for Advanced Nurse Practitioners

Supervision and Preceptorships for Nurses and Midwives

For registered Nurses and Midwives clinical supervision aligns with the purpose and requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Councils (NMC) revalidation process:

  • Increase awareness of the professional standards, including NMC standards of proficiency
  • Reflection on the role of the NMC code in practice
  • Feedback on practice and improvement
  • Development of proficiency and new skills
  • Sharing and reflection

Practitioners can record their learning, development and reflections to use as evidence for revalidation. This process is supported through the Turas Professional Portfolio.

Preceptorship is additional supervision offered to nurses, midwives and SCPHNs during their transition or adaption, to a new role (NMC 2020, NES 2023). More information can be accessed via the Preceptorship learning site

Supervising practice with students on NMC programmes

The NMC standards of proficiency require all registered nurses and midwives to provide effective supervision, teaching and performance appraisal (NMC 2018, NMC 2019).

Practice supervision for pre-registration and post-registration NMC programmes is regulated under the Standards for student supervision and assessment (NMC, 2019). NMC practice supervisors and practice assessors must be appropriately prepared to undertake these roles. The supervisor should have appropriate clinical expertise and be appropriately prepared to undertake the role with the underpinning knowledge required to facilitate learning in practice using a coaching approach. Ideally practice supervision is provided by supervisors from the same clinical specialism. However, supervision from other members of the multidisciplinary team may also be beneficial.

To determine your development needs you can undertake a self -assessment (appendix 8) and access relevant resources via the Future Nurse and Midwife site on TURAS Learn.

All boards will also have their own standards around implementing and learning re Practice Assessor/Supervisor roles.
