News and updates in relation to Rural Advanced Practice
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has launched its Principles for Advanced Practice, setting out clear expectations for nurses and midwives in advanced roles across the UK. These principles aim to bring greater clarity, consistency, and support to advanced practice, helping to improve the safety and quality of care.
Developed through extensive engagement, the principles define what advanced practice means for both professionals and the public. They are designed to support workforce planning, education, and governance, and will form the foundation for future regulatory standards.
Further details about the principles can be found at NMC calls on employers and professionals to adopt new advanced practice principles - The Nursing and Midwifery Council

Across the UK, experienced nurses and midwives are increasingly stepping into advanced practice roles that involve complex, autonomous, and expert-level responsibilities. These roles significantly benefit patient care by enabling timely, person-centred decisions, seamless care coordination across settings, and enhanced communication. Advanced practitioners also support service transformation, improve safety and quality, and contribute to workforce development and retention. All health and social care staff are likely to come into contact with someone who is bereaved, or a situation around the time of a person’s death. This includes those working in non-clinical, administrative and other support roles, as well as staff in teams which are directly patient or client-facing.
Knowing how to manage these situations is important – so we as staff can support and help other people, whilst also looking after our own wellbeing.
But thinking of what to say to someone who is bereaved, whether that be a family member, patient, person who we are supporting, or perhaps a colleague may feel daunting.
This session will provide an introduction to grief and bereavement. It may help those attending feel more confident in answering questions about bereavement such as:
What to expect
During the session, the speakers will play some animated films, share information and provide some key take-away messages to help you feel more confident in dealing with bereavement in the course of your work. There won’t be any breakout rooms, but the speakers may invite you to engage digitally with some online polls and interactivity.

The NMC is currently developing an approach to the regulation of advanced practice – a level of practice in which a nurse or midwife has demonstrated their ability to work autonomously at a high level. As part of the review, we’ve commissioned the Florence Nightingale Foundation (FNF) to undertake an independent piece of research to explore the potential implications of additional regulation of advanced practice on internationally educated nurses and midwives working in the UK.
If you qualified as a nurse and/or midwife outside of the UK, and have experience or interest in advanced practice, please take this survey by 28 May: https://academy.florence-nightingale-foundation.org.uk/advanced-practice-and-ienms-3/
