This section of the toolkit provides an overview of supervision and links to further learning and helpful resources.

Supervision and preceptorship

All healthcare professionals should have regular supervision appropriate to their role. The aim of supervision is to facilitate guided reflection and learning, to support practice development and enhance work satisfaction. Employers are responsible for providing appropriate access to supervision.

General guidance on what should be available for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals can be accessed via the Supervision learning site. Support requirements for undertaking the Royal Pharmaceutical Society core advanced pharmacist curriculum are available from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Resources, courses and supervisor peer support for pharmacy is also available at TURAS Learn educational supervision in pharmacy page .

Supervision forms part of the “Triangle of Capability” (Scottish Government 2021) and is a requirement of advanced level practice.

Triangle of Capability

The West of Scotland ANP Academy has provided an example of good practice for effective clinical supervision, with a focus on development and maintenance of competence and capability. It is important to note that this is only an example and may not reflect structures and processes in all areas of practice.

More detailed information regarding supervision can be found within the Facilitating Learning Pillar.
