2. Sodium Hypochlorite Extrusion

Video

Sodium hypochlorite extrusion is a rare but recognised complication of endodontic procedures. This video discusses risk factors for hypochlorite extrusion, the signs and symptoms of a hypochlorite accident and management strategies

3. Hypochlorite Accident Activity

Activity

Please watch the video of someone recounting a hypochlorite accident and its effects. This is an actor speaking.

Ask yourself the following and possibly discuss with a colleague.

  1. Do you think the management of the hypochlorite accident was appropriate?
  2. If this happened to you in your practice, how do you think this would make you feel?
  3. If this patient attended your surgery and asked you to explain what had happened and for your advice on onward management, what would you say?

It is important to recognise, that even with all precautions taken, hypochlorite accidents do still occur. You should not let such an occurrence lead you away from what is considered best practice when it comes to irrigant choice.
