Expectations, Roles and Responsibilities

According to the NMC (2020) preceptorship aims to support new registrants, including newly qualified health visitors and school nurses, in their transition from a student to an accountable practitioner in their chosen field of practice. In Scotland the concept of preceptorship has broadened to also include nurses and midwives new to a role or environment.

For example, this may include overseas nurses / midwives who have taken up a nursing or midwifery position in Scotland; nurses and midwives returning to practice; nurses and midwives who have transferred to a new ward or setting; nurses and midwives who have secured a promotion; as well as nurses and midwives new to managerial and executive roles. However regardless of where practitioners are on their career journey, for preceptorship to be effective, those engaging in preceptorship need to understand the purpose of preceptorship and be clear about their role and responsibilities within the preceptorship process.
