About the Line Manager role

Line managers have an essential role in supporting preceptorship in practice as they have good oversight of staff numbers, workload, qualification(s), and experience in their locality as well as the capacity of staff to undertake the role of preceptor.

Role and Responsibility
  • Matching a preceptor with a preceptee for the duration of the preceptorship programme.

  • Facilitation of an induction and orientation programme for the preceptee as per local procedure.

  • Clarification of the role and responsibilities of preceptors and preceptees during the preceptorship period as agreed in the preceptorship agreement.

  • Ensuring that the preceptor and preceptee are aware of the relevant policies and procedures that support and guide practice.

  • Supporting pre-planned meetings as agreed in the preceptorship contract.

  • Being aware of any personal needs of the preceptee and ensuring that any reasonable adjustments are in place to support their learning.

  • Monitoring the support the preceptee receives to adjust to their new role.

  • Reviewing the preceptees preceptorship and induction experience.

  • Maintain documentation pertaining to the preceptorship period i.e. Record that preceptorship has been offered and has taken place. 

  • Ensuring that the TURAS Appraisal and Personal Development Planning is carried out at the end of the preceptee’s first 12 months in post or completion of the preceptorship programme.

  • Provision of support to both preceptor and preceptee regarding the preceptorship process and relationships.

  • Supporting preceptor preparation, which should involve discussing learning needs and transferable skills.

 

* It is recognised that there may be situation where a preceptor is not available. In such situations and to ensure continuity within the preceptorship process, it may be necessary for a co-preceptor with the appropriate knowledge and skills to be appointed to act on the preceptor’s behalf.
