Public Health

Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (NHS England)

The Skills Framework provides key information on career pathways and occupations/job roles, as well as existing and emerging skills required for the occupations/job roles. The skills frameworks have been developed internally to support staff in a number of generic job families:

Government

This framework is used to assess the technical skills of government statisticians and data scientists who belong to the Government Statistician Group (GSG).
 

This Capability Framework describes the job roles in the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Profession and provides details of the skills needed to work at each role level.

SFIA

SFIA describes the skills and competencies required by professionals in roles involved in information and communication technologies, digital transformation and software engineering. SFIA 7 is the current version of the framework.

NHS

The digital capability framework has been developed to support the improvement of the digital capabilities of everyone working in health and care. It is intended as a developmental and supportive tool that can empower and enable all health and social care staff.
 

This Informatics Skills framework is split into three sections: Technical skills, Business skills and NHS skills. Technical skills include: data science tools, data visualisation tools, spreadhseets, statistical process control. Business skills include: business analysis, communication, leadership, project and programme management, Six Sigma and Lean. NHS skills include: clinical coding in the NHS, clinical information systems in the NHS, information governance in the NHS, NHS data flows.

Other useful health frameworks

The Core Competencies Project (CCP) provides a methodology for the development of core knowledge and skills-based competencies for Clinical Informaticians (CIs) and the mechanism by which these competencies can be mapped to educational and professional developmental initiatives for accreditation.
 

FEDIP brings individuals and organisations together to establish professional standards in health informatics. The institutions licensed to award FEDIP offer their members registration at four levels – Practitioner, Senior Practitioner, Advanced Practitioner, Leading Practitioner – dependent on the competence, knowledge and experience of the applicant in the field of health informatics.
 

The PKSB for Health outlines the broad range of knowledge and skills required by librarians and knowledge specialists working in health.
 

The standards of proficiency for clinical scientists. The standards set out in this document complement information and guidance issued by other organisations, such as a professional body or employer.
