Framework to support staff development in the decontamination of re-usable medical devices

The framework supports practitioners to increase and develop their existing knowledge, understanding and skills in the complex area of decontamination. It considers the work which is carried out in a wide range of roles in decontamination services to identify the different types and levels of skills which staff working in a decontamination role may require whether working in local, endoscopy or central decontamination.

Preventing and reducing infection and other risks in the healthcare built environment

The overarching aim of the Knowledge and Skills Framework is to support the educational development of NHS staff and external partners, for example building contractors and suppliers, in acquiring the knowledge and skills to prevent and control the potential risks of harm posed by healthcare facilities. Known risks commonly associated with service systems are the provision of water and drainage, air ventilation, electricity, fire and medical gases.

The framework articulates the knowledge and skills required across 4 levels of practice: informed, skilled, enhanced and expert.  You can access the framework via the Healthcare Built Environment Zone.
