Inhalation sedation learning and resources for Dental Core Trainees and Inhalation sedation certificate information

Welcome to Inhalation sedation

Welcome to the Inhalation sedation (IS) page for Dental Core trainees (DCT) who are undertaking Inhalation Sedation Training as part of their placement.

Here you will find important information regarding how to complete your IS training whilst in your DCT post.

The training comprises of one full day of in-person teaching.  This will be followed by practical training which will take place in the trainee’s health board placement with supervision provided by a suitably qualified clinician. In addition, it is the trainee’s responsibility to ensure that all elements of the IS Portfolio are completed as per the guidance on these pages, and submitted to the trainee’s Core Training Advisor. You are also required to attend the training day in ‘Management of Medical Emergencies’.

Contact your Core Training Adviser if you have any queries regarding your training.

Provide a thorough assessment of the patient in relation to managing dental anxiety and select the most appropriate modality of treatment

Critically evaluate the range of conscious sedation techniques available

Ensure a safe sedation environment at all times

Apply the principles of safe sedation practice when treating patients including peri-operative care

Learning content

It is expected that DCTs will have attended the in-person teaching day which is complemented by the learning resources related to inhalation sedation on these pages prior to commencing any practical training in your health boards.

Once all elements of your portfolio are complete, this should be submitted to your Core Training Adviser to be approved.

Once everything is in order, a completion certificate for IS training will be issued.

Please note it is still the responsibility of your employing health board to ensure that you are competent to undertake IS independently.

It is important that IS Portfolios should continue to be maintained in the longer term with all cases logged and any future CPD / audit activity relating to inhalation sedation included. This is a requirement of current standards and you may be required to produce this as evidence for an employer and for sedation practice inspections.
