A Scottish Consensus Guideline was agreed for both the diagnosis and management of preoperative anaemia in adults undergoing major elective and urgent surgery. The guideline was developed by the RCoA Perioperative Medicine Scottish Leads Anaemia Group, and released on the 26th October 2018 at a national launch event.
Subsequently a National Scottish Pre-operative Anaemia Programme was launched to support sustainable implementation of the guidelines across the NHS in Scotland. A minimum dataset and toolkit has been developed to aid collection of standard core data, whilst informing clinicians of prevalence and outcomes prior to and following surgery.
Launched in October 2018 at the first Management of Preoperative Anaemia in Scotland meeting.
