This section introduces the rationale for the chest drain pack, explains how to use the pack and sets out the learning outcomes.

Rationale for the Chest Drain Programme

This clinical skills programme has been developed to enable practitioners to develop their knowledge and skills in the insertion of and the care of chest drains. Adopting a multi-professional approach to clinical skills training will promote standardised practice in the delivery of health care procedures, will encourage effective working relationships and will provide patients with access to multi-skilled, flexible health care practitioners.

The programme is suitable for any health care practitioner currently working or training to work in the NHS, in the UK, who is involved as part of their work in the insertion of, removal of or the care of patients with chest drains in place.
