Anticipated Learning Outcomes

1. Fully assess a trauma patient through effective questioning, observation, clinical examination and investigation to establish diagnosis. 
2. Identify classic signs and symptoms of facial fractures and other injuries that require maxillofacial input. 
3. Make an appropriate maxillofacial referral including all relevant information. 
4. Evaluate which soft tissue injuries require suturing and how to proceed through appropriate choice of suture materials and suture technique. 
5. Manage dental fractures; decide when to re-bond tooth fragments if available, select appropriate bonding technique or if tooth fragments unavailable select effective alternative materials. Assess when pulpal management is required and apply most effective technique. 
6. Manage intrusive, extrusive and lateral luxation injuries using appropriate technique to reposition and splint teeth. 
7. Demonstrate a range of splinting techniques to stabilise a displaced tooth; flexible and rigid splinting and when each technique appropriate.  

Course Aim

The aim of this session is to develop the DCT’s knowledge, skills and attitudes in relation to the management of dental trauma so that they can care for their patients effectively in the clinic and refer when appropriate. Participants will work in groups using real life case studies to problem solve. Faculty should facilitate the group work and where required correct mistakes and close gaps in knowledge and skills.  Participants will be seated in 4 groups of 5 participants.  Prior to attendance groups should have looked at DTUK website and IADT guidelines.
