Dr Wil Nel, Rural Emergency Physician, Isle of Skye.

Alongside clinical practice, he has held senior leadership roles, including District Medical Lead and Clinical Director. Since 2024, he has also shared the clinical lead role for the Paediatric North of Scotland Trauma Network and Major Trauma Centre in Aberdeen.
His career brings together generalist practice, emergency care, service development and a commitment to sustaining high-quality healthcare for rural and remote communities.
Reflecting on reasons for undertaking the Credential, Wil said:
“I chose to pursue the Rural and Remote Health Credential because I have seen how geography shapes access to care. Working across Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross has shown me both the resilience of these communities and the challenges they face in receiving timely, specialist input.”
“The Credential gives structure to the skills needed to offer safe, broad and adaptable care closer to home. It supports clinicians to manage complex cases locally, reduce unnecessary travel for patients and strengthen continuity of care.”
“For me, it is about contributing to equity in a practical, dependable way, helping people in remote areas receive high-quality care without leaving the communities they value, live and work in.”
“Rural healthcare is about safe, adaptable care close to home, grounded in equity, so people in remote communities can receive high-quality support without leaving the places they value.”
