IPC Specialist Career Framework
A personal and organisational development tool
Introduction
NHS Education for Scotland (NES), on behalf of the Scottish Government, has developed an Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Specialist Career Framework for Scotland. The Framework has been developed in collaboration with IPC specialist and educators and aims to support the development of the specialist IPC workforce across Health and Social Care by outlining the knowledge, skills and behaviours required at the different levels of practice.
The Framework supports national workforce priorities, including:
The Infection Prevention and Control Strategy for Scotland: Vision and Priority Statements is also supported by this framework.
The work has been informed by a multidisciplinary Short Life Working Group, with contributions from IPC specialists, Health Protection colleagues, educators and stakeholders from a range of health and social care settings.
Who is the framework for?
The framework is intended for staff working - or preparing to work - in specialist IPC roles across Scotland, including:
- IPC Practitioners
- IPC Managers and IPC Clinical Leads
- IPC Associate Practitioners
- IPC Doctors/clinical scientists
- Health Protection Nurses
- Healthcare Scientists involved in IPC, surveillance or epidemiology
It can also be used by:
- Educators designing or delivering IPC learning
- managers and organisations responsible for IPC workforce development and planning
