Dr Andy Barlow is a GP Partner and GP Trainer at Lochgilphead Medical Centre, based at Mid Argyll Hospital, where he also serves as Clinical Lead for Mid Argyll. He has a strong professional focus on delivering high quality care in rural and remote communities.

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh in 2007, Dr Barlow spent more than 15 years serving in the British Army. During this time, he gained extensive experience providing healthcare in remote and challenging environments around the world. He completed core training in anaesthetics before moving into GP training, maintaining a longstanding interest in remote and rural medicine.

After relocating to Scotland in 2022, Dr Barlow quickly recognised the complexity and frequency of acute presentations in rural practice. He continues to work to strengthen local services and improve patient care. Alongside his clinical role, he is a committed medical educator and values the opportunity to share the breadth, challenge, and rewards of rural medicine with the next generation of clinicians.

Reflecting, Dr Barlow said:

“The Rural & Remote Credential reflects the full scope of complex care I deliver as a GP in rural practice. I was honoured to be awarded the Credential through the recognition route, as the curriculum closely aligns with my day-to-day clinical work and builds on the experience I have developed throughout my career".

Recognition is important not only at an individual level, but also for the wider organisation I work within, NHS Highland. Patients in rural communities increasingly present with advanced and complex needs, and the Credential formally recognises the skills, expertise, and professional judgement required to meet these challenges safely and effectively.”
