Thank you for the vital role you play in supporting our IMGs. Your commitment is instrumental in building a skilled and inclusive workforce and we hope we can support you in this role.
In line with the national framework, we offer a 4-6 week shadowing period to allow time for you to settle into a new clinical environment and build confidence with local systems and protocols. Together with your IMG lead, a personal development plan will be created at the start of your employment to help you identify and achieve your learning goals. You will have a one to one meeting with your supervisor to ensure you are ‘rota ready’ before the completion of your shadowing period.
NHS Orkney runs a standard induction day for all new doctors on the first day of paid employment. In addition to this, all locally and nationally appointed International Medical Graduates (GPSTs) are invited to participate in an enhanced induction programme. This programme features four dedicated sessions covering topics including:
These sessions are completed within the first four weeks of starting your post and are fully integrated into your rota, offering you protected time to attend.
A simulation session is also incorporated into your enhanced induction, offering you the opportunity to develop your clinical skills and familiarise yourself with local protocols in a protected environment.
The final week incorporates an open forum with the aim of addressing any outstanding questions or unmet needs. IMGs will be notified of these sessions in advance by the IMG lead. The programme is scheduled every six months (February and August) to align with changeover periods.
