Colleagues will value designated time to reflect and plan their development with you. Try and ensure you have time to cover all aspects of the appraisal during the allocated time. Ensure the environment is quiet, relaxed and private.

Providing and receiving feedback forms a key aspect of an appraisal. Top tips on feedback can be found within the NHS NES resource Leading for the future: tips for giving and receiving feedback.

Providing constructive feedback can help individuals evidence their effectiveness as a practitioner, contributing to their continuing professional development, supporting them to meet performance objectives for KSF, and demonstrating achievement of professionalism which may contribute to their NMC revalidation and HCPC audit. Supportive discussion utilising Development Needs Analysis Tools (DNAT) may also be helpful.

The ability to facilitate reflection is integral to supporting the professional and personal development of others. Reflection helps to support people to think through and process any experience and their reactions, to gain maximum learning and insight. The 2024 VBRP® Three Levels of Seeing is one model of reflective practice among many. Values Based Reflective Practice is an intentional way of reflecting on past practice, in the present, to improve practice in the future  You may wish to use another model as the plethora of reflective models which is indicative of the deep recognition of how important and valuable reflective practice is, both for safe, effective practice, and for practitioners' wellbeing.

The National Wellbeing Hub offers a range of resources on supporting staff and their wellbeing.

Appraisals are person-centred and can raise both the successes and challenges of an individuals or teams' performance. You may wish to consider how you can best prepare for conversations with colleagues. Information around Challenging conversations and how to manage them may provide a helpful guide to navigating conversations with colleagues
