As of 1 October 2020, there were approximately 94 Dispensing GP practices recorded as operating within 13 Health Boards. Some Dispensing GP practices work across multiple sites or branch surgeries that are not included within this number, therefore the total number of dispensing GP practices is greater than the 94.
Dispensing GP practices provide a vital role in rural communities across Scotland, ensuring that patients have access to prescribed medication even when they live some distance from a Community Pharmacy. The role of the rural General Practitioner (GP) and their small team provide a high quality, safe and sustainable service that is an important element to the sustainability of rural communities and is highly valued by patients. The Centre is working in partnership with stakeholders to develop an outline for training packages for practice managers and administrative staff working in Dispensing GP Practices.
The educational project involves collaboration with several key stakeholders from Health Boards, GP Practices, Scottish Government and Pharmacy colleagues.
A training development group was established in 2023 that meets bi-monthly to discuss and action-plan the training development. Review of available training offerings across Scotland has taken place. A training needs analysis has been sent to Dispensing Practices to capture training requirements of the staff. The group has reviewed the draft NHS Highland Guidance for Dispensing Practices, now ratified by Scottish Government and an action plan has now been developed for the training development.
