Courses which are funded for Scottish CST year 2 trainees.
The Booster Camp comprises of two one-day courses on consecutive days – MSC and CoSMoS. (You must attend both days consecutively).
MSC - Managing Surgical Crisis includes classroom non-technical skills training in recognising and responding safely to unexpected or crisis events in the OR. This is followed by eight simulation stations with debrief, in which we always see trainees grow in confidence and safety. Directed by Alistair Geraghty, Cons Colorectal Surgeon Forth Valley, and team.
CoSMoS – Consultation Skills that Matter for Surgeons – Through video and classroom material we aim to give you some theory and tools to help with Consultation and Shared Decision Making with patients. After the event and practice in the workplace, we will send out a webcam and consent form so you can record a real consultation and upload it to us for a debrief session with faculty over Teams, which will be done in groups of three trainees. A further short Teams session later in the year will consolidate the learning. This the first module of a potential 4-module series for ST2-5.

Alternatives to BaSiCS
BaSiCS is the standard Year 2 course supported through the CST Simulation budget.
Year 2 trainees with a paediatric, urology, vascular, orthopaedic or other non-general surgical specialty interest may request support for an alternative simulation-based course if it maps to the Core curriculum and is of a similar nature.
Funding support would come from the CST Simulation budget for course fees and would normally be considered up to the cost of the supported course it is replacing. If the alternative course is more expensive, additional costs may not be covered.
Before booking an alternative course, please email cstsimulation@nes.scot.nhs.uk with the course details, copying in your TPD. The request will then be reviewed for approval before funding is confirmed.
If approved, when applying for study leave, please state that this is an equivalent course to BaSiCS.
