Scottish Surgical Boot Camp

All CST year 1 trainees are expected to attend this 4-day simulation-rich course at the Highland Clinical Skills Centre Inverness, covering a range of technical and non-technical skills and an induction to the community of practice.

Skills covered include:

  • bowel and vascular anastomosis
  • skin flaps
  • laparoscopy
  • prioritising and making effective phone calls
  • situational awareness
  • decision making
  • communication and teamwork
  • common error traps in surgery
  • leading a ward round in simulation
  • writing op notes
  • communications skills challenges
  • how to get the most from your trainer
  • starting out in research.

Course fee: CST trainees' fees will be paid by NES (not including locum appts). Fee includes course fee, lunches and dinner.

Expense claims: Travel expenses can be claimed from the simulation budget through Turas. Accommodation up to £100 per night will also be covered up to a total of 4 nights. Claims must be made in advance of the course.

Recognition And Prevention Of Injury And Deterioration (RAPID) (RCSEd)

Aims to outline a safe and straight-forward approach to the management of all types of surgical patients through the simulation of a multi-disciplinary ward round.  This Critical Care course provides an approach which can be used in partnership with a candidate’s existing expertise to provide a high level of care which should aid the recognition of complications and the provision of high-quality patient care.

Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) (RCPSG)

Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP)is a two-day, interactive course (including mandatory, pre-course eLearning) covering the practical skills and knowledge needed to look after surgical patients including those who are deteriorating or at risk of doing so.

Highly knowledgeable faculty from both surgical and anaesthetic specialties will help you develop practical, theoretical and personal skills in a safe environment so that you can assess and manage critical situations in a systematic way.

Basic laparoscopy skills – RCPSG (optional)

The aim of the course is to familiarise the delegate with the equipment and instruments used in laparoscopic surgery, to allow simulation of manipulation of objects within a laparoscopic environment and to have the opportunity to practise simulated operations using a gallbladder and appendix laparoscopic training model.
