Scottish Inter-facility Transfer (ShIFT) Course

Add to favourites

This course aims to prepare trainees for the inter hospital transfer of critical care or critically unwell patients. The content of the course includes simulated scenarios and orientations and discussions with Scottish Ambulance Service Staff and faculty experienced in Transfer Medicine. These courses have been mapped to transfer training curriculums, including the RCoA curriculum. We will address key issues to improve safety and performance in this area such as:

  • Interior and contents of a front line ambulance
  • Patient optimisation prior to transfer
  • Preparation, planning and packaging for transfer
  • Communication before, during and after transfer Composition of the "transfer team"
  • In-transfer emergency drills
  • Go/no-go decision making

Ideally trainees should attend this course shortly before their first transfer of a critically ill patient between hospitals. We also recognise that there are some trainees who have completed a few transfers already, but would benefit from further training.

Current locations of Transfer Courses across Scotland include:

  • Kirklands Hospital Medical Education Training Centre (course lead Kathryn Bennett)
  • Scottish Clinical Simulation Centre for Human Factors (course lead Alex Arthur)
  • Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (course lead Roxy Bloomfield)
  • Queen Margaret Hospital Simulation Centre, Fife (course leads Ben Slater and Reema Patel)
  • Raigmore and Highland Clinical Skills Centre, Inverness (course lead Sarah MacLean)
