Scottish Inter-facility Transfer (ShIFT) Course

Add to favourites

This course aims to prepare trainees for the inter-hospital transfer of critical care or critically unwell patients.

The content of the course includes simulated scenarios and orientations, and discussions with Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) Staff and faculty experienced in Transfer Medicine.

These courses have been mapped to transfer training curriculums including the RCoA curriculum. Key issues to improve safety and performance in this area will be addressed:

  • interior and contents of a front line ambulance
  • patient optimisation prior to transfer
  • preparation, planning and packaging for transfer
  • communication before, during and after transfer composition of the "transfer team"
  • in-transfer emergency drills
  • go/no-go decision making

Eligibility:

Anaesthetic, Intensive Care Medicine and ACCS trainees CT2 and over

Ideally trainees should attend this course shortly before their first transfer of a critically ill patient between hospitals. We also recognise that there are some trainees who have completed a few transfers already, but would benefit from further training.
