Scottish Organ Donation Simulation Course

Course details
This one‑day, multidisciplinary simulation course is designed for senior Intensive Care and Anaesthetic trainees (ST4+) as well as Critical Care nurses. It provides participants with practical, hands‑on learning supported by an expert faculty in organ donation. The high faculty‑to‑candidate ratio ensures ample opportunities for guided discussion and personalised feedback from Clinical Leads for Organ Donation and Specialist Nurses for Organ Donation.

Throughout the day, candidates will develop and refine both their practical and communication skills relating to organ donation. Key areas of focus include:

  • Determination of Death by Neurological Criteria (DNC)
  • Communication with families around organ donation
  • Tissue donation processes and considerations
  • The ethical and legal framework for organ donation in Scotland
  • Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD)
The programme also includes dedicated time for open discussion, allowing participants to explore the challenges, complexities, and evolving issues within organ donation practice.
