New Academy of Advanced Practice Research UK (AAPR-UK).

The Academy of Advanced Practice Research has been established to provide a United Kingdom wide strategic approach to collaborative research which adds to the growing body of evidence across all health professions showing the impact of Advancing Practice. This is an independent UK wide organisation. You can find out more by reviewing this recent presentation from AAPR-UK on Shaping the Future.

The Advanced Practice Academies have agreed their first position statement on Advanced Nurse Practitioner Final Sign-off. The aim of the position statement is to support employers and practitioners with ensuring that they are adequately prepared for the role and are competent to practice.

You can access the position statement here

The position statement has been through a rigorous governance process that included review and agreement by the regional and national academies as well as the Scottish Executive Nurse Directors (SEND) group and the national Transforming Roles Steering group. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have also had sight.

New way to submit material for the Toolkit

We have added a new section in the introduction to highlight how you can share material to add to the toolkit. It’s a very simple process all you have to do is complete the form which is a series of questions designed to assess that the content meets the governance criteria set by the Editorial Board.

There is a new NES Pharmacy Podcast now available: The NES pharmacy podcast | NHS Education for Scotland.

The podcast aims to provide updates on developments in pharmacy education as well as linking in with pharmacy teams in Scotland. There are 5 episodes currently available.

New Publications Section coming soon to the Evidence, Research and Development Pillar. We are keen to showcase the growing body of advanced practice research that is being written in Scotland.

NMC Advanced Practice Review

Keep up to date on the latest NMC Advanced Practice review information. 

Key decisions:

  • developing standards of proficiency for advanced level practice (and associated programme standards)
  • adopting a collaborative approach to develop a UK-wide advanced practice principles framework incorporating a shared position or definition of advanced level practice
  • ensuring that advanced level practice requirements are included in the wider review of revalidation and the Code scheduled for 2025/26.

Funding applications for the Multidisciplinary Rural Advanced Practice (RAP) MSc Programme 2024 are now open and close on 31 May 2024. 

Applicants should be currently employed within a rural community team/ primary care (this might include those who cover community hospitals, as well as Primary Care) practice, providing healthcare services within NHS Scotland.

The prerequisite to apply for a NES funded place is that practitioners will have already completed Clinical Assessment and Non-Medical Prescribing Modules (these may be held at either SCQF level 9 or 11, which will enable entry into year 2 of the programme. Practitioners may exit the programme after year 2 with a Diploma in RAP or may choose to continue into year 3 and complete the full MSc RAP Programme.

Please note, only if places and funding allow, we may support some learners with NMP and Clinical Assessment.

To apply for the MSc in Rural Advanced Practice, you will require to meet the University of Highland & Islands admissions criteria.

Advanced Practice Review

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have completed their review and have approved: 

  • developing standards of proficiency for advanced level practice (and associated programme standards),
